It’s been almost a year since the release of The Catcher in the Rye, but the film’s director and writer, David O. Russell, still doesn’t have the answers to how the film is affecting people.
“We still don’t know if it’s hurting them or just causing them anxiety,” he told The Huffington Post in an exclusive interview.
“I think a lot of people are just being kind of dismissive about it.”
Russell says that while he has received “a lot of negative feedback” regarding the film, the fact that he’s made a film about depression “doesn’t mean that I’m saying we should be afraid of it.”
Russell says that he hopes the film will help others overcome their depression and is eager to see it in theaters next year.
“Maybe we’ll get a response that maybe we didn’t expect,” he said.
“Because it’s not something you can just turn away from and forget about.
You can’t just sit back and take it for granted.”
The Catcher In The Rye is a comedy about a young boy named Tom who, after his parents divorce, finds himself drawn to a woman named Elizabeth who appears to be suffering from depression.
It’s the kind of story that might cause the average viewer to feel a little down, but Russell says he was able to bring out a lot more than that.
“I was able — the film had a lot to do with me — to say, ‘I’m not just making this film for myself,'” he said, adding that he hoped the film could help other people feel better.
Russell said he is also very thankful to his mother, who helped him make the film.
“My mother is the reason I did it,” he says.
“She was the first person who encouraged me to make this film.”
Russell also said that he was thankful to those who have made positive comments about the film on social media, and said he had to take those comments into consideration.
“This is what I’m trying to do: to make people feel good about themselves and have hope, and to feel they can be themselves,” he explained.
“So if you’re like, ‘Wow, I think I’m depressed, I’m not sure what’s going on,’ don’t make a movie about it.
That’s really not going to help anybody.”
Russell said that while the film has inspired him, he is still trying to find answers to some of the more difficult questions surrounding depression.
“If you’re depressed and you go to a psychiatrist, you’re going to have to deal with a lot and have a lot, and that’s why it’s important to talk to your family,” he continued.
“You’re not going see a psychiatrist until you’ve been through depression yourself.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t talk to someone, but you have to get some help.”
