Your Opinion of Yourself is the Only One that Matters

Your Opinion of Yourself is The One That Matters

I suck at accepting compliments. Praise is wonderful to hear, but I automatically start blushing, get tongue tied and want to run away. I'm sure if I dig deep I will figure out the root of this reaction. Most of the time I don't believe the compliment I receive is true.

Receiving compliments is a sign that you are doing something well, that you are loved, and/or admired. The compliments feel good when you hear them, but they are dependent on the opinions of others on your actions.

Compliments = Positive Judgement

Examples of Compliments:

  • "That dress looks great on you."
  • "Your hair is on point."
  • "You rocked that presentation."

Even if they are positive, a compliment is still a form of judgement because it is based on the opinions of others.

Here is the deal, whether you are seeking a compliment or not, what someone else has to say about you doesn't freaking matter! What another person says about you is more of a reflection of themselves than of you.

Even if they are positive, a compliment is still a form of judgement because it is based on the opinions of others.

So, whose opinion matters?

YOURS!!!

As I get older, I worry less about what other people think of me and more about what I think of myself. I still get concerned about some people's opinions (my mom), but I have started letting my happiness depend on what others think about me.

I know simpler said than done. Moving in the direction of listening to yourself takes work. Since our birth, people have people telling us their opinions. As children, we crave the comforting praise of our mothers to soothe our fears. As we become teenagers, we believe our friend's opinions of us is the only thing the matter.

The power behind any idea that you accept to be true is based on what you believe. So I ask you to take some time for yourself and respond to the questions below. Start your journey to listening to yourself and taking compliments from yourself.

1. Are you living your life for someone else's approval?

2. What is the one thing that makes you special and unique?

3. How can you choose to be happier with who you are right now?

I'm going to wrap up this post quickly so that you can go ahead and download the journal page below to reflect on the questions above. Give yourself 10 minutes of quiet time and think through these issues.
